February 2024 Group Call

Hi Killers Keynoters,

Here’s what we discussed 2/13/24:

  • Letter of Agreement: Create your letter of agreement. You don’t want to create a contract that an organization’s legal department must approve. A simple letter of agreement works best. I emailed you my simple LOA, adding Courtney’s paragraph on IP. Feel free to share yours on our Facebook Page.
  • Speaker One Sheet / One Pager: The biggest problem with speaker one sheets is that there are too many words. Words are like calories; too many words will weigh down your information and confuse the buyer. Think “white space” makes your one-sheet easy to read and remember. Feel free to post your one sheet on the Facebook page.Do one sheets still work? Lois Creamer and Crystal Washing think so! Lois Creamer’s book, Book More Business – Make More Money, has a great section on one-sheets. Crystal Washington, CSP, CPAE, creates one pagers for several of her industries. Check out Crystal’s One Pagers.
  • Podcasts: Wendy suggested that we share great podcasts on our Facebook page. Let’s keep our FB Page vibrant and post often. Shawn suggested that we check out this podcast search engine.
  • Tamra shared with us that she has been interviewing leaders and getting their different input on succession planning. Not only is she gaining great content and insights for her speaking and coaching, but she is also building relationships

February Topic: Adding Your Perspective

In an era of information overload, the words of Tony Robbins resonate more than ever. Speaking on CNBC (my go-to morning resource), Robbins said that while we are inundated with data, we are desperate for wisdom. To me, wisdom = YOUR PERSPECTIVE

The challenge for us is transforming a presentation from teaching points into a vibrant, wisdom-infused experience. In this session, we delved into Connecting with your Core Beliefs.

Assignment: Begin writing out your core beliefs.

Defining your core beliefs is the best way to pull your perspective on your subject matter out of your head and out of your mouth. Very early (2003) in my career, I had an opportunity to work with Garrison Wynn. Garrison had been working with Vickie Sullivan for a few months and focused on delving into your core beliefs. He did an exercise with me that changed my keynotes and business forever.

Here’s what we did: Background.

I was hired to speak to a group of 40 administrative assistants. They wanted me to present on the topic of Personal Leadership. I decided to include a chunk called “Discovering Your Value” section in my content.

Here’s how my exercise with Garrison played out:

  • Garrison: Who are you presenting to, and what area do you want to dive into?
  • Karen: The client wants a Personal Leadership workshop for their admins (all female)
  • Garrison: Okay, and what is it you want to share?
  • Karen: I want to discuss the importance of knowing and owning your value.
  • Garrison: Okay, let’s start with this … You believe what about women and their value?
  • Karen: I believe most women don’t see the value they bring to their job and workplace.
  • Garrison: So, you believe that most women don’t see the value they bring to their job and the workplace and …
  • Karen: I believe that most women don’t see the value they bring to their job and the workplace… and when we don’t see our value, it’s hard to see the value others bring.
  • Garrison: and when it’s hard to see the value others bring and…
  • We continued, and the material I got for our interaction grew.

The concept for the workshop came from working with Garrison and him pulling out of me how I felt about women seeing their value. Because I came from retail and had the opportunity to buy wholesale, I purchased 40 handbags and filled each with $300 of play money. During the presentation, I auctioned off values such as honesty, work ethic, relationships, helpfulness, etc., and the women purchased the values they connected to. Some spent all their money on one value while others bought several for less. It revealed a great deal about some of the women and grew their understanding of self. It became a huge hit, and from that one workshop, I booked 18 events with this company.

Here’s another exercise you can try related to your perspective and content.
